When my family and I founded the Bhalwani Family Charitable Foundation, we wanted to focus on causes where our support could truly change lives. Few things have touched as many families as cancer, including my own. I know firsthand how devastating it is to see cancer move through generations. It is not just an individual diagnosis; it is a legacy of risk and uncertainty that entire families carry.

That is why we are so proud to support the Bhalwani Familial Cancer Clinic at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto.

Why This Clinic Matters

Some cancers are not random—they are hereditary. They can be traced through family history, passed silently from one generation to the next. This means daughters, sons, mothers, fathers, and even grandchildren may be at higher risk without even realizing it.

The clinic exists to change that. It helps people understand their cancer risk and take action long before symptoms ever appear. At its heart is a team of world-class genetic counsellors, doctors, and scientists who give patients the knowledge and tools to manage their future.

The Role of Genetic Counselling and Testing

At the clinic, patients meet with expert genetic counsellors who:

  • Review family history and identify patterns that may signal hereditary cancer.
  • Review family history and identify patterns that may signal hereditary cancer.
  • Guide patients through the option of genetic testing, where a simple blood
  • sample can reveal whether a genetic change linked to cancer risk is present.
  • Provide personalized recommendations for cancer screening, prevention, or high-risk programs such as Ontario’s Breast Screening Program.

It’s important to understand: inheriting a cancer-related genetic change does not guarantee you will get cancer, but it does mean you have a higher risk. Knowing this
risk allows people to take preventive steps or undergo earlier and more frequent screenings. That difference can save lives.

How Our Foundation Helps

Through our foundation, my family has contributed investment to expand access to this life-saving work. These funds help ensure more families can access genetic counselling and screening, and that research into hereditary cancers continues to advance.

This is not just about research or technology. It is about giving families peace of mind, options, and the ability to face the future with more certainty. The clinic’s work often means that cancers can be caught in their earliest stages—or even prevented altogether.

For me, this support is deeply personal. I believe every family deserves the chance to break free from the cycle of hereditary cancer. Too often, cancer strikes when it is already advanced and difficult to treat. But through early detection and preventive care, we can change that story.

The Bhalwani Familial Cancer Clinic is giving families the gift of foresight, and with it, the power to act. I am honoured that our family’s foundation can play a role in making this possible.

The future of cancer care is not only about curing the disease but about preventing it. By identifying hereditary risks early and by guiding patients with compassion and expertise, the clinic is helping families take control of their health.

It is work that saves lives, protects futures, and strengthens generations. And it is work we will continue to stand behind with pride and determination.
